What Is World Health Day?
Since 1948, World Health Day has been celebrated by the World Health Organization. This day is meant to focus on specific health topics that impact people from around the world. There is no doubt COVID-19 is a topic of focus for 2021, but there’s more to consider as well. This year, the topic of focus named by the organization is, “Building a fairer, healthier world.”
There are many ways to interpret this. While World Health Day is not meant to focus specifically on addiction, in the U.S., there is a heroin epidemic that is a growing public health concern. Many people know of a loved one that struggled with addiction to prescription drugs or other opioids, including heroin.
A Focus on World Health Day Locally
World Health Day is a good time to think about the risks you’re facing yourself or even those within your family or community. Consider a look at your friends and family. Do you know someone that’s struggling with drug use? Is there a friend that spends too much time drinking? Do you know of a college student who binge drinks or a family member with a past filled with trauma that uses drugs to hide it? There are things you can do to reach out and help them:
- Ask them to open up to you without judgment. They can provide you with insight into what they are thinking and experiencing.
- Talk to a family member about what you’re seeing. Ask them to get help.
- Turn to a local addiction treatment location to find out if you can volunteer to help.
- Reach out for a family member with an addiction to determine if there’s room in a detox program for them. Then, ask them to get help.
- Determine if there are people in your community struggling with homelessness or illness as a result of addiction. Help them find help.
There are many small steps you can take to help others. Often, that involves simply focusing on educating people about their options for treatment.
